Origin Blueberry Smoothie

The concept of blending pureed fruit into thick beverages gained massive mainstream popularity in the 1930s with the invention of the electric blender. As health-conscious consumers began seeking portable nutrition, blueberries quickly became a star ingredient due to their incredible nutritional profile. Today, the well-documented health benefits of blueberries—including their high concentration of vitamins and antioxidants—have made them a celebrated staple in juice bars and home kitchens worldwide.

Why I Love This Recipe

I love how easily this recipe adapts to whatever you happen to have in your refrigerator or pantry. You can seamlessly boost its nutritional value by tossing in a handful of spinach, some chia seeds, or a scoop of your favorite protein powder. It is one of those brilliantly versatile quick smoothie blends that fits flawlessly into a curated, wellness-focused nutrition plan while still tasting like an indulgent, sweet treat.

Tips for the Perfect Blend

For the absolute best, ultra-creamy texture, skipping regular ice cubes in favor of frozen fruit is highly recommended. Adding ice can water down the vibrant berry flavor as it melts, whereas relying entirely on frozen blueberries and a frozen banana is a game-changing expert blending technique that guarantees a rich, thick, shake-like consistency every single time.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups frozen blueberries

  • 1 medium banana, sliced and frozen

  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt (or dairy-free alternative)

  • 1 cup almond milk (or your preferred milk)

  • 1 tbsp honey or pure maple syrup (optional, for extra sweetness)

  • ½ tsp pure vanilla extract

  • Optional: 1 tbsp chia seeds or flaxseeds for extra fiber

Directions

  • Add the almond milk and Greek yogurt to the bottom of your high-speed blender first. Adding the liquid ingredients closest to the blades helps the blender run much more smoothly.
  • Add the frozen blueberries, frozen banana slices, honey, vanilla extract, and chia seeds (if using).
  • Secure the lid and blend on high for 60 to 90 seconds.
  • Stop the blender halfway through and scrape down the sides with a rubber spatula if any fruit chunks are stuck near the top.
  • Continue blending until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy, with no visible chunks of fruit remaining.
  • Pour the Blueberry Smoothie immediately into two chilled glasses. Garnish with a few fresh blueberries on top and serve cold.

Notes

  • Fresh vs. Frozen: If you only have fresh blueberries and bananas, you can absolutely use them, but you will need to add about 1 cup of ice cubes to achieve a cold, thick texture.
  • Liquid Adjustments: If your smoothie is too thick to blend properly, add an extra splash of milk, one tablespoon at a time, until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • Storage: Smoothies are always best enjoyed immediately, but you can store leftovers in an airtight mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Just give it a vigorous shake before drinking.
